When the idea of working with you was introduced I thought my company had lost the plot. How could an outsourced company do this work in the way it needs to be done? Now I feel completely differently! Having seen how it works, heard the feedback from the business and seen how everyone at Radiant interacts, I think it was a very, very good decision to bring you in.

What we do

We draft and negotiate commercial contracts for you.

We are used by clients to get high-volume but lower-value contracts (less than £5m/$7m) off their desk, so they can focus on more complex deals.

Our team of specialist commercial lawyers acts as part of your team, focusing on getting your deals closed quickly, while making the contracting process almost… enjoyable! We bring technology such as document automation and dashboards so that you get the benefit of legal tech without the pain of implementation.

How it works

We follow a four step process to deliver our commercial contracting service:

Step 1
Scope

You identify the contracts to be supported (see our guide), and we work with you to clarify your needs and priorities and agree a tailored process that fits with how you already work.

Timeframe: 1-2 weeks

Step 2
Prepare

We get ready to take on the service: We create or fine tune existing playbooks, set up the processes and dashboard and automate your contracts. We agree with you the escalation and governance process.

Timeframe: 1-4 weeks

Step 3
Pilot

Running an optional pilot allows you to experience the service and make sure that it really adds value, before you fully commit. At the end of the pilot, even if you don’t go ahead, you will get:

  • a defined process between the legal team and business teams, with a process map

  • an intake form

  • playbooks

  • document automation where appropriate

  • data on your work and your internal clients

Timeframe: 1-3 months

Step 4
Run

We scale up the service to handle all in-scope agreements from start to finish, tracking performance against service levels. You will be able to see the live performance through our real-time dashboard.

Plus
Continuous Improvement

We believe that everything can be improved, so we have a programme to deliver improvement projects every quarter as part of the service. We report back on what has been achieved and agree the priorities for the next quarter - so you will know that the service is not just being delivered, but constantly getting even better.

Why we work the way we do

Our purpose is to fix the contracting process - we believe that contracting matters, but that there is a lot to improve.

We believe that to make progress:

  • contracting must be standardised, to allow the process to be improved

  • standard terms should be short, clear, reasonable, and relevant

  • automation is needed, but there is no “silver bullet” and commercial relationships are ultimately about humans

  • the priority should be on getting good deals in place quickly that support great relationships

We wrote the book on how to mature contracting processes and can accelerate you through the different stages to become a market-leader in how you enter into and manage your contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Scope

What kinds of contracts do you support?
Our managed legal service can support any repeatable commercial contracts, typically with a value of up to £5/$7 million. Examples include sales, procurement, NDAs, supply of goods and services, and licences.

We are used to supporting clients with specialist contracts. Between the templates, playbooks, and some simple training, we can quickly get the team up to speed on the unique issues that come up in your contracts and how to handle them.

The business is used to how we support them. Will it change?
Our lawyers will act as an extension of your in-house team. They will think the same way, ask the same questions, understand your systems and processes at a granular level and have the same approach to the business. The team is user-friendly and commercial!

How will I know what I will pay?
We provide services on a fixed-price basis and don’t charge hourly rates (we don’t even keep timesheets). The bundle of contracts to be supported and pricing will be set and agreed with you upfront and we guarantee no billing surprises.

Prepare

What do I need to do to get this set-up? Is it going to create more work for us?
We understand that this can be a big concern, but we’ve made it easy. Even if you feel (like many in-house teams) that you have lots of gaps in your current processes, we can quickly help you get up and running with only a few hours of your team’s time.

We do this by:

  • Bringing expertise in how to deliver contracting efficiently, having developed our service for over ten years.

  • Building first drafts of playbooks for you, by analysing your existing deals (we have built proprietary tools for this) to extract the key issues that come up in practice and how you have historically dealt with them.

  • Using experienced lawyers who “get it” to set up the service.

  • Adopting a pragmatic approach to what is needed to get going, recognising that we will always be improving the service as long as we support you.

Will I really get this work off my desk?
We will update the playbooks to ensure that we don’t ask you the same question more than once. You decide when we will escalate issues to you, which will be described in the playbook. This usually changes over time as you build confidence in the service.

Pilot

How will I know what is going on?
The playbook will ensure that we are not going beyond the positions you are comfortable agreeing, and include the rules for when to escalate. During the pilot we will agree service levels so that you (and the business) knows when to expect a response from us. You will also have management information via a live dashboard allowing you and your team to track performance against key metrics. There will be regular governance meetings to update you on account progress and address any concerns.

What does resourcing look like?
We have teams of lawyers in South Africa and Trinidad, allowing us to support international deals from Tokyo to Los Angeles. Our lawyers are locally qualified, are trained in English contract law and use playbooks to deal with other local law issues. We have an extensive training and quality assurance process, with experienced internal lawyers able to provide judgement calls, to ensure that we are acting commercially and don’t have to escalate unnecessary points to your team.

Run

Are you really that fast? Does quality suffer?
Yes, we really are running at over 75% of contracts (either first drafts or responding to red-lines) sent back within half a day. We share our data on how fast we are, which no one else does in the industry. Perhaps someone out there is faster, but we can’t find them!

We achieve this speed by working constantly on process improvements that free our lawyers up to actually get to the work, rather than drowning them in meetings and other non-value add activities.

Although we care about speed, we always prioritise quality. We know that some deals will always take more time and we aren’t shooting for 100% in half a day. But quality comes from giving our team the right training, tools and senior lawyer support and saving them from distractions, not letting a contract sit on a desk for a week because of other priorities!

What technology do you use and why? Do you use AI?
We are keen users of technology, such as:

  • Document automation to draft all contracts, to improve drafting speed and quality.

  • Flow, our proprietary matter management system, to track what is going on and report back to you with a customised dashboard.

  • Remarkable, our proprietary Word extensions with over 90 tools, to improve turnaround time and quality.

  • Automated intake forms to ensure that we ask the right tailored questions, and can start helping sooner.

We wrote the book on which legal tech really helps with contracting and can guide you on systems that you might want to look at in future in your environment, but we provide everything needed to run the service without you having to do any IT implementations.

We use “AI” document review software in certain circumstances where it helps, but we believe in giving our team the tools they need to deliver terrific human services rather than replacing them with AI - more bionic lawyers than robots!

Will the service be consistent?
We use playbooks to ensure that the contracts we negotiate reflect the positions you are comfortable with. These will be approved by you as part of the set-up and as they evolve. Where novel issues arise, we will escalate these to you for your guidance.

Will I have the same people supporting me?
A team of lawyers will be allocated to you, led by an ‘account lead’. Our lawyers support multiple accounts so that we can handle spikes in volumes.

We will always inform you of any team changes and will introduce any new joiners to you and the business. We have a detailed onboarding and training process to ensure that team members fully understand the account before starting to support you.

How will spikes and volume fluctuations be handled?
Our services are scalable to ensure a consistent level of service through periods of high demand or staff holiday leave. While a standard team will be allocated to your accounts, other Radiant lawyers (think of them as the ‘bench’) will be ready to step in and support as and when needed.

Will the solution keep getting better?
Through our continuous improvement process, we will improve the ways we support you every quarter. We will update you at the end of the quarter on what has been achieved and agree the priorities for the next quarter based on your needs.

Will I own the playbook?
Yes. The playbooks and any improved templates are your documents. If the services end, the latest versions will be provided to you.
